Baby Turtle Hatchling on the Sand Coloring Page

A hatchling walks slowly to the right with its head stretched forward out of the shell. Its four flippers are set wide and the whole animal sits low, which is exactly how a very young turtle moves.

The shell is the reason to pick this page up. It is one large dome divided by thick lines into big plain panels, and every panel is empty. There are few enough of them that a small child can finish the shell without losing patience, and enough that an older one can treat it as a pattern and work out a scheme before starting.

Underneath, the sand is a single gently curving line and nothing more. No grains, no stipple and no shading, which is a deliberate choice: a textured beach would have swallowed a drawing this simple.

Green over the shell with a lighter belly is the natural reading. The more interesting one is to treat the shell panels as separate tiles and give them a range of greens and browns, light at the top of the dome and deeper around the rim. That single move turns a flat shell into a curved one.

The head, flippers and tail are each one enclosed shape and take a flat color without any fuss.
