A hedgehog stands on all four short legs and faces right, with a long pointed snout, one round eye and a small smile. The whole back is covered in spines.

Those spines are drawn as rows of large open points around the rim with shorter marks filling in behind them, and every one of them is an outline rather than a filled shape. That is the difference between a hedgehog page you can color and one you cannot. Spines are usually drawn as dense hatching, which looks right and is miserable to work with.

The face, the belly and the legs are left smooth and completely unmarked, so the sheet has two clearly different regions: a busy back and an open front. That contrast is the thing to use.

The simplest approach that looks good is a mid brown across the spines and a much paler cream on the face and belly, with the line between them left exactly where the drawing puts it. Because the spines are individually outlined, an older child can go further and vary them, darkening the ones along the top and lightening those near the legs, which gives the back a curve it does not otherwise have.

The snout, the ear and the four small feet are the only other shapes, and they all take the same soft pink.
