Seven tulips rise from the bottom of the sheet in a loose bunch, four closed into the classic cup and three opening far enough to show their inner petals. Long strap leaves twist between the stems and a single narcissus sits low at the front. Behind the flowers, filling the whole panel, is a damask of scrolling vines drawn in a much lighter line than the tulips, and the entire composition sits inside a ruled rectangular border with a flower and spear motif in each corner. That pale background pattern is the decision this sheet forces on you. Filled in, it turns the page into a piece of wallpaper and the tulips become a silhouette standing against it. Left white, the tulips stand alone and the pattern reads as a watermark. Both are good answers. The tulip cups are large smooth shapes broken by only a couple of fold lines, so they hold a graded wash cleanly and forgive a wobbly hand. The corner motifs are the finest work on the page and are best held to one accent color so that they frame the flowers instead of distracting from them.
