One hibiscus bloom opens at the middle of the page, large enough to span roughly a third of the sheet, with five broad ruffled petals and a long stamen column reaching out to the upper left under a stippled anther. Palm fronds enter from the top left and bottom left corners and broad veined leaves crowd in from the right, all of them cropped by the edges so the plant reads as a detail lifted out of something larger. The lines are thick and confident throughout and there are perhaps twenty five separate areas in total, which makes this one of the few sheets in this set that suits a marker rather than a pencil. That simplicity is the whole point. With so few shapes, the color choice does all the work: a red bloom against green leaves is the postcard version, but the same drawing carried out in a single blue, or in no color at all beyond gray, turns into something far more graphic. The petal veins radiate from one point and sit widely apart, so you can follow them with darker strokes for depth without the page turning fussy.
