Magnolia branches enter from both sides, cross the middle of the page and meet in a tangle of blossoms near the center. Seven or eight flowers are fully open with broad strap shaped petals, and scattered among them are perhaps forty closed buds drawn as pointed teardrops on short stalks. The woody branches are outlined in a heavier line than anything else and run behind the flowers, which makes them easy to pick out and color first. Small loose spirals and curls float across the background at random, about thirty of them, and each corner of the sheet carries a matching ornamental flourish built from the same spirals with a blossom at its center. Those four corner pieces frame the composition without any drawn border. The buds are the efficient part of this page: they are all the same shape, so once you settle on a treatment you can move through them quickly, and the finished sheet gains a lot of coherence from it. The open blossoms have generous uninterrupted petals that suit a soft gradient. The floating spirals are optional and the page reads perfectly well with them left white.
