Lavender grows straight up out of the bottom edge and fills the lower two thirds of the sheet with about eighteen flower spikes at staggered heights. Each spike is a column of small overlapping bracts, roughly twenty to a stem, so this page carries a great deal of repetitive small work that rewards patience more than technique. Long narrow blade leaves cross between the stems at the base and give you somewhere to put green. Three bees hang in the open sky above with their wings out and their bodies banded. The top third of the page is deliberately empty, and that blank band is useful: a light wash behind the spikes lifts the whole composition, while leaving it white makes the lavender read as a field under bright noon sun. For the flower heads, resist filling every bract with the same purple. Two or three related tones scattered at random across the spikes are what make real lavender look alive rather than printed. The bees are small and simple and take under a minute each, which makes them a good warm up before you start on the stems.
