A woman's head and shoulders fill this page, turned into a three quarter view with her eyes closed and her chin slightly lifted. Her hair is the subject. It falls in two heavy masses either side of the face, drawn as several hundred long parallel strands that curve together and break into tight spirals wherever a lock ends, and there are perhaps twenty of those spirals around the lower edge. A crown of flowers sits across the top of her head, magnolia shapes and open daisies with dark stippled centers among pointed leaves. Behind all of it floats a halo of pale swirls drawn in a lighter line. Hair this fine is a trap and a gift at the same time. Coloring it strand by strand is impossible and pointless. What works is laying one mid tone over the whole mass, then darkening only where the strands bunch together, which lets the existing line work do the describing for you. The face carries no shading marks at all, so keep it flat and pale, and let the flower crown be the loudest thing on the sheet.
