Six poppies lean out of a tall narrow vase at the middle of the page, their petals crumpled and veined with fine radiating lines, every flower center filled with a dense black stipple. Two buds on hooked stems reach up beyond them. The vase below is almost bare, just a few long curved lines suggesting stems seen through glass, and it is the largest uninterrupted shape on the sheet. Behind everything lies a second layer of ornament drawn in a much lighter line: banks of swirls filling all four quarters, a faint rosette behind the vase, and heavier scrolled corner pieces that step forward again. That two weight drawing is the thing to work with. The pale background scrolls are meant to stay pale, so a light wash or bare paper is the right answer there, while the corner pieces can go dark to hold the sheet together. Poppies want to be red, but those black centers are so strong that orange or deep pink will actually read better against them. The empty vase will take a pattern of your own invention if you want one.
