A hummingbird hangs in the air at the middle of the page, bill pointing toward the upper left, its one visible wing thrown up and back and drawn as a rank of long tapering flight feathers. The far wing sits hidden behind the body, which is how the pose actually works, and the tail is fanned into five broad blades below. Flowering sprays fill both sides of the sheet: five petal blossoms with fine radiating stamens, tight buds on thin stalks, and a great many broad pointed leaves each carrying a single vein line. The top left of the page is left open. There are two quite separate textures at work and it helps to notice that before you begin. The bird is built from long clean strokes and takes a graded metallic treatment beautifully, greens running through to violet across the back. The foliage around it is flat and repetitive by comparison and is best kept quiet, because anything strong in those leaves will bury the one thing on the page worth looking at.
