This is the kind of gate Hector Guimard put on the Paris Metro, and the sheet gives you every band of it. Two leaves meet at a center stile fitted with a pair of scrolled handles. Above them runs a row of linked spirals, and above that the ironwork breaks free of the frame entirely and grows into flowering sprays that arch over the top on both sides. The vertical bars are capped with small curls at the head and a run of heart shaped scrolls at the foot, and a long whiplash vine snakes up the outer edge of each leaf. Iron wants one color, so the temptation is to flood the whole gate and stop. Resist it. Give the bars and frame a single tone, then lift the scrollwork a step lighter so the curls separate from the grid behind them. The flowers at the top are the reward for all that patient linework, and they can carry real saturation without unbalancing the page. A dark background behind the bars makes the whole gate read as a silhouette.
