The nautilus spiral is a logarithmic curve, and Art Nouveau designers loved it for exactly that reason. This one fills the left two thirds of the sheet with its chambers drawn as wide curved bands that narrow as they wind inward to a tight center. Ribbons of seaweed erupt from behind the shell on every side, each one a long strap that tapers and then hooks over into a curl, and a few small bubbles drift through the gaps. The banding makes this page unusually satisfying to plan. Alternating two tones around the spiral turns the shell into a striped shape and emphasizes the geometry, while a single hue that deepens steadily from the rim to the center reads as a real shell. Mother of pearl is the ambitious option, laying pale pink, mint and lilac side by side in adjacent chambers with plenty of white left showing. Keep the seaweed to one or two greens so it stays a frame. The bubbles look best left white with only a thin ring of tone.
