The middle of this page is empty, and that is the design. An upright oval of plain double line sits at the center of the sheet with nothing inside it, and everything else is packed into the wreath that surrounds it: around fourteen open blooms of several kinds, banks of leaves, and ribbons of scrollwork weaving between them, with a pointed crest closing the ring at the top and another at the bottom. Nothing repeats exactly. The left side and the right side carry different flowers, so you cannot color one half and mirror it. What you do with the empty oval decides what this page is. Left white it reads as a mirror, and the wreath becomes a frame around your own reflection. Filled with a flat dark tone it turns into a silhouette portrait. Given a pale wash it becomes a window. Some people write a name or a date there instead. The wreath itself is fine work with a great deal of overlap, and the quickest way through it is to settle on three colors for the flowers before you start rather than deciding bloom by bloom.
