Magnolia branches sweep diagonally across this sheet from the upper left down to the lower right, and the long curve they trace is the whole design. Open blossoms sit along the whole length of it, each one showing broad cupped petals around a tall ribbed column of stamens at its heart. Between them are the buds, still wrapped in their pointed outer scales, and narrow oval leaves with a clear rib running down the middle. The cluster at the bottom right is the densest passage on the page. Magnolia petals are large and almost empty, which makes them ideal for a gradient. Lay a pale tone at the petal rim and deepen it steadily toward the base, and the flower turns three dimensional with no extra linework. Saucer magnolia runs cream at the tip into a strong pink at the bottom, and copying that gives you a scheme for the entire sheet at once. The stamen columns want your darkest accent, a rust or a deep gold. Keep the leaves subdued and slightly gray so the blossoms stay in front of them.
