A lantern hangs from a ring at the top of this sheet, and a vine has taken over the bracket it hangs from. The lantern itself is a tapered cage of glass panels, with a domed crown divided into long segments, a band of round medallions below it, and tall pointed panes running down to a heavy base ring. The vine arches over the top and pours down both sides in a curtain of heart shaped ivy leaves on thin curling stems, some of them hanging well below the lantern. Glass and foliage want opposite treatments. Keep the panes pale and let plenty of white stay in them, because a lantern reads as lit only when it is lighter than everything around it. A warm yellow in the lower panes fading to almost nothing at the crown does this in one pass. The metal frame can take a dark bronze or a verdigris green, and verdigris has the advantage of tying the lantern to the ivy. Vary the leaves between two or three greens and let a few go yellow, which stops the curtain from reading as a flat mass.
