The ginkgo leaf was a gift to Art Nouveau designers. It is already a fan, already split down the middle, and already veined in fine parallel lines that run from the stalk out to a wavy rim. Six of them spread across this sheet at different angles and different sizes, carried on long stalks that cross one another in wide loose curves from the bottom edge to the top. A small round seed hangs from a thread at the lower left. Those radiating veins give you a decision to make. Coloring across them with a light hand lets every line show through, which is the calmer result. Coloring along them with a sharpened pencil turns each fan into a set of stripes, which is slower but far more striking. Real ginkgo turns from green to a clear yellow in fall, so a single leaf worked in yellow among five green ones gives the page a focal point at no cost. Keep the stalks a quiet brown so the fans stay in charge.
