A three panel screen stands open on this sheet, hinged so the outer leaves angle toward you, and each panel carries its own flowering branch. The left branch climbs in a long S curve and breaks into a mass of blossom at the top, the center one runs slimmer and sparser, and the right one thickens into broad pointed leaves near the foot. The frame is plain except for a small carved scroll on each bottom rail, which keeps the woodwork from competing with the flowers. Screens like this hung in every aesthetic drawing room of the 1890s. Treat the three panels as one picture rather than three, and let a single branch color carry across all of them so the eye travels left to right. The blossoms can vary in tone from panel to panel without breaking that, and a slightly deeper shade on the crowded right hand cluster gives the composition some weight. Leave the panel grounds pale, because a screen is paper or silk stretched on a frame and it should read as translucent. The wooden frame takes one warm brown and nothing more.
