Art Nouveau borrowed its shapes from plants, and this bouquet shows exactly why. Five wide blossoms open across the sheet with dotted button centers, and every petal has a soft curve rather than a straight edge. Beneath them a ribbon of stems folds over on itself in a long scroll, the kind of whiplash line the style is known for. Slender leaves fan out in every direction and thin tendrils curl off the sides like springs. The petals are large and mostly empty, which makes this a forgiving page even though it looks ornate. Try picking two or three shades of one color and moving from light at the petal tip to deep near the middle. The dotted centers look best in a contrasting tone, gold or rust against a cool petal. For the foliage, vary your greens a little between the upper and lower sprays so the arrangement gains some depth. The scrolling stems at the bottom can carry a single flat color, which keeps the eye moving through the design instead of getting stuck. Gel pens work nicely on the thin curling tips.
