A wooden footbridge crosses just above the lip of the falls, and it is the most rewarding thing on the page. The artist has drawn every plank, the rope handrails, and the knotted grain in the posts, then set it against a heavily textured cliff with water dropping away beneath. Trees lean in from either side and their leaves are drawn individually. This is a dense, detailed sheet for adults and older teenagers, and it takes a while.
Wood is where to concentrate. Rather than filling the planks with one flat brown, lay a light tan over everything first, then draw the grain back in with a sharper, darker brown pencil following the lines already there. Vary the tone from plank to plank, because real weathered timber never matches. Against all that warm brown, keep the water cool and pale and the contrast will do the rest.
Bridges appear above waterfalls more often than you might expect, and for a practical reason. The bedrock that creates the drop is usually the hardest rock in the river, which makes the lip one of the few places along a valley where a crossing has something solid to sit on.
