The waterfall in this picture is really just the backdrop. The artist has given most of the page to what is happening underwater, with a cutaway view of the pool below the falls where fish swim in a loose shoal, two turtles paddle past, and reeds and rounded stones fill the bottom. Everything is drawn with thick, confident outlines and the creatures are large, so this suits quite young children, from around three or four upward.
There are enough separate fish here to make a game of it. Let your child give every fish a different color, or pick two colors and alternate. The turtles are worth slowing down for, since their shells are divided into segments that look wonderful with a slightly different green in each one. Chunky crayons or thick markers are fine for this page and no fine detail will be lost.
While you color, here is something to mention. The deep pool at the foot of a waterfall is called a plunge pool, and the falling water drills it out over many years. Fish gather there because the churning water carries in a steady supply of food.
