Coastal Waterfall Spilling Into The Ocean Coloring Page

This drawing catches the rare moment where a river runs out of land. The falls drop straight off a headland and break into the surf below, and the artist has packed the cliff face with fissures, ledges and clinging shrubs. Waves curl in from one side, and gulls ride the updraft above the spray. Fine, closely spaced lines make this one of the busier pages in the waterfall set, so it suits older children, teenagers and adults who want something to settle into over an hour or two.

Color choice does a lot of work here. Keep the falling water pale, almost untouched, and push your deepest blues and greens into the ocean at the base so the white of the falls reads as motion. Warm grays and soft ochres on the rock stop the whole page turning blue. Colored pencils give you the control the thin cliff lines need, and a blender pencil smooths the sea.

Waterfalls that empty straight into the sea are genuinely uncommon, because most rivers slow and widen into an estuary first. The best known example is probably McWay Falls on the Big Sur coast of California, which drops about 80 feet onto the beach.
