A wide tree stump dominates this page, cut flat across the top so the growth rings show as circles inside one another. Bark runs down the sides in long vertical grooves, and roots spread out at the base onto the ground. A cluster of small mushrooms grows in a shelf out of one side, the way they genuinely do on dead wood. Grass sits at the foot. The rings are the feature. Coloring them as alternating bands in two close tones makes the cut surface look like real timber, and it is one of the few places in this collection where strict repetition pays off. Count them with a child and you have turned a coloring page into a short lesson about how trees record their own age. Keep the mushrooms on the side pale against the darker bark. They are the living part of the picture and they should be the brightest thing on it.
