Dusk is built into the entire layout of this page. A full moon sits in the upper right with a handful of small circles scattered across its face, and long flat cloud bands stretch away from it toward the left. Low hills run behind, with a stand of small conifers on the right slope and a strip of still water on the left.
The butterfly rests on a wide bloom just below center, wings closed upward into one tall shape. Its outer margin is a jagged scalloped edge with fine hatching just inside, and a ladder of narrow cells climbs the length of each wing. The flower beneath has a dozen broad petals and a dense stippled middle that the insect is standing on.
Four ornamental corners finish the page, each a spiral scroll with a small round blossom set into it.
The meadow behind is deliberately printed in a lighter line than the foreground. Leave it pale, or work it in a single gray or lavender, and those closed wings will hold the eye exactly where the drawing intends them to.
