The pine cone is the real subject here. It sits low and slightly left, built from around forty overlapping scales that spiral outward from a blunt tip, every scale a small rounded diamond with a notch cut at its base. Anyone who enjoys working one tiny shape at a time will spend most of the afternoon on it.

Above the cone a butterfly has settled with its wings raised and pressed together, so you see them from the side rather than from above. The upper wing is long and leaf shaped with faint parallel veins running its length. The lower one carries a border of small looped marks. Its head turns toward the right and both antennae end in a dot.

Needled branches enter from the upper left, the upper right and both lower corners, each needle a separate stroke fanning off a central stem. Two slim trunks rise at the far edges with occasional knots and a rough patch of bark near the bottom right.

Green is the obvious choice for those needles, but try two of them: a cool green for the boughs at the top and a warmer one for the branches below the cone.
