Bold simple outlines carry this desert scene, which makes it a good fit for younger colorists and for anyone who wants a page finished in one sitting.
A tall cactus stands at the middle of the sheet. Deep vertical ribs run the length of its body and short spines are spaced along each rib, so the plant reads as a cactus immediately rather than as a generic green column. One stubby arm bends upward on the left side. Sitting across the top is a crown of rounded blooms, and a butterfly has landed directly on them with its wings spread flat and open.
The desert behind is sparse on purpose. A flat topped mesa sits low on the skyline to the right, with a smaller branching cactus nearer the front, and a squat round barrel cactus rests on the ground to the left. Loose pebbles and a few tufts of dry growth are scattered across the sand.
Shapes here are large and well separated, with generous open areas inside the cactus body and the blooms. That leaves room for thick markers or chunky pencils without any risk of running over an edge. The sky is left completely blank, which invites a sunset wash if you want one.
