Four butterflies gather around a cluster of open zinnias here, three perched with their wings spread flat and one drifting toward the top right corner. Every wing is divided into long cells by its veins, which is the detail that makes this page fun to fill and also the reason it takes a while. The flowers below have thick, crowded middles drawn as a spray of tiny lines, and tall pointed buds rise on either side that have not opened yet. Two much smaller moths flutter near the bottom, easy to overlook. Wings like these look best when you repeat a pattern rather than flooding each one with a single tone. Pick a base shade, fill every cell with it, then go back and darken alternating cells or just the outer row. The four butterflies do not have to match, so this is a good chance to try a different scheme on each. Warm oranges and deep browns suit the monarch style wings on the left. Leave the flower middles pale and let the petals carry the strongest color, which keeps the blooms from competing with the insects.
