Two insects meet near the top of this page, facing one another with their wings raised. The one on the left has a short banded abdomen and stands on the petals of an open daisy, its wings long and ribbed with a few straight veins. Its partner on the right is wider, with upper wings that taper to a point and a scalloped lower pair beaded around the rim. Both carry round heads, a single dot for an eye and one antenna curling upward.

Under them a band of meadow fills the bottom third. Long grass blades cross at angles, and between them stand buttercups, a five petal daisy, a clover head and several closed buds on slim stalks.

Everything above the grass line is empty paper, which keeps this one friendly for a beginner.

Try coloring the two insects in the same pair of shades, but swap which shade goes where. That small reversal makes them read as a conversation instead of as two unrelated drawings, and it costs nothing beyond a moment of planning before the first pencil lands.
