Two hummingbirds face each other across the middle of this sheet with their wings thrown wide, and each wing is laid out as a fan of separate feathers with an empty shape inside every one. Their long tail feathers sweep down and outward, framing the lower part of the scene. Both beaks are fine and straight and very nearly touch.

Directly beneath them, a much smaller bird sits on a slim stem looking out at the reader. It is easy to miss on a first pass and it is one of the nicest details on the page.

Three butterflies cross the top of the sheet at different angles, wings patterned with veins and marginal spots. Loose spirals of scrollwork fill the upper corners and stop the composition from floating.

The bottom third is given over to a deep bank of garden flowers, most of them wide open and seen face on, with rounded petals and dotted middles. Buds, seed heads and long leaves push up through the gaps between them.

Everything is clean open linework on white paper. Because the birds carry the largest unbroken shapes and the flower bank carries the smallest, this page works well when you settle the birds first and use the border to experiment.
