A calm face looks straight out from the middle of this sun, with two wide open eyes, a small closed mouth and a single dot marked on the brow. There is no shading on it anywhere. Around the face sits a ring of rounded overlapping petals, and beyond those spread about sixteen long tapering flame rays of uneven length, some straight and some curving, which keeps the outline from looking mechanical. The line is thin and even throughout and the drawing occupies rather less than half the sheet, leaving wide white margins on every side. This is one of the gentler pages in the sun group and a good one for a light touch. The face in particular should stay pale, because any strong color across it will fight the fine features and turn a serene expression into a mask. The rays are large and open and will take a graded orange or a flat gold equally well. If you want the page to feel fuller, the surrounding white is the obvious place to add a wash of sky.
