A wide open circle sits at the middle of this sun design, ringed by bands of ovals, petals and arrow tips.

An empty circle holds the middle of this design, and it is large, easily a third of the width of the whole figure. Nothing is drawn inside it. That blank makes the page unusual among mandalas, because you get one big uninterrupted surface at the point where these designs are normally busiest.
Around it the rings build quickly. First a close band of small ovals, then a ring of rounded shapes each holding a nested oval, then long pointed petals with concentric ovals stacked inside them. The outermost ring alternates between slim spikes and broader arrow tipped points, and those outer edges are inked much heavier than anything else on the sheet.
That weight difference is worth planning around. The heavy outer strokes read as solid black already, so pushing dark tones right up against them loses the shape. Keeping the outer ring lighter and letting the ink do the work gives a stronger result.
The nested ovals repeat often enough to set up a rhythm, and coloring the same layer the same way in every petal is what turns the repetition into a pattern rather than noise.
