Sixteen pointed flames in a double row around an empty circle, built for flat color and hard edges.

Sixteen pointed flames form the outer edge of this sun, and behind them sit three further ranks of shorter rays that alternate in length so the silhouette reads as a double row rather than a single ring. Each ray carries a slim chevron or leaf shape inside it, echoing its outline a second and sometimes a third time. At the middle, a plain open circle is left completely empty, bounded by one heavy line. The design sits alone on white paper with no border and takes up about two thirds of the sheet. Art deco work depends on flat color and hard edges rather than blending, and this drawing is built for exactly that. Pick three or four colors, assign each to one rank of rays, and apply them without shading. The empty circle at the middle is the decision that changes everything: gold or orange makes it a sun, deep blue makes it a night sky, and left white it becomes a hole straight through the design. There are around a hundred regions here, most of them narrow, so a fine tip beats a broad one.
