Four clean tiers of pointed petals step outward from a blank white disc. The tiers grow in size as they go, the innermost ones short and narrow, the outermost long enough to run past the edges of the sheet. Interior line work barely exists. A faint vein runs down some petals and most carry nothing at all.
All that empty area makes this an excellent sheet for testing a technique. Try burnishing, where you press hard with a pale pencil over a laid down color to blend it into a smooth waxy surface, since you need wide open shapes to see the effect. Or use it to practice a simple gradient across a single petal. Either exercise would be impossible on one of the densely patterned lotus pages.
For a fast result, one shade per tier from dark at the middle to pale at the rim gives you a clean ombre in about twenty minutes. Children as young as four manage the outer tiers without trouble.
American lotus grows wild through the Mississippi basin and opens a pale creamy yellow rather than the pink most people picture, which is worth knowing if you want a native looking flower at the end.
