Two koi swim in from the left and the right, noses turned toward a lotus standing plain and unornamented at the middle. Their bodies carry a clear scale pattern and their fins trail behind them in long curves. A dragonfly hovers at the upper left with its wings drawn as fine veined panels. Leaf shapes fill in the space around all three.
Because the flower itself stays undecorated, the animals become the interesting part, and that shifts where you should spend your effort. Give the koi their traditional white bodies with red or orange blotches and they will carry the page, leaving the lotus free to sit quietly in cream or the softest pink.
The shapes are generous, so crayons and thick markers both work. The dragonfly wings are the only fiddly area and even those are manageable from about age seven. Half an hour is realistic.
In Japanese storytelling koi push upstream against the current and, in some tellings, become dragons for their trouble. Setting them around a lotus stacks two emblems of persistence into a single drawing.
