A tall teardrop bud stands right at the front of this design, overlapping an open bloom that spreads behind it. Further back sits a spiky rosette built from ring upon ring of narrow points, with a small target of concentric circles at its core. Ornamental arches of pointed leaves crown the top and anchor the base.
The layering is the interesting problem. Three planes compete for attention, and if you color them all at similar strength the sheet turns to noise. Decide early which plane wins. Keeping the front bud pale and pushing the rosette behind it into darker tones gives you depth immediately, and the whole thing snaps into focus.
Fine tipped pens handle the rosette points, while the bud and the open petals are wide enough for pencil or even a brush pen. Count on forty five minutes to an hour. It suits a confident ten year old and upward, and rewards anyone who enjoys picking out a pattern piece by piece.
Lotus buds push up on a stiff stalk and stand clear above the water before they open, which is how you tell the plant apart from a water lily. Water lily pads and blooms float flat on the surface instead.
