There is no frame on this page and no border pattern. The circle is built entirely out of butterflies, and that is the whole idea behind it.
Small insects are arranged into rings that turn around a common middle point. Near the center they overlap and press together until their wings almost interlock, and as the rings move outward they spread apart and grow slightly larger, so the density eases off toward the rim. The outermost ring is not cut off by a line. Its wingtips make the boundary themselves, which gives the disc a scalloped edge that ripples the whole way around.
Each butterfly is drawn as a complete little creature rather than a repeated stamp. Bodies are segmented, antennae are visible, and the wings carry their own veins and spots, which means a pattern emerges at arm's length while close up it stays a crowd of individuals.
This is one of the more demanding sheets in the collection and it suits a steady hand and a fine nib. A good approach is to treat each ring as its own band and shift hue slightly from one ring to the next, letting the spiral structure appear as you go. Outlines only, white paper behind, nothing filled in solid.
