This is the quietest of the butterfly mandalas. The insect is drawn with only a few divisions in each wing, four broad cells above and five pointed ones below, so the wings are large open areas rather than a puzzle of small pieces. A slim vine loops in a full circle behind it, dipping and rising, with paired leaves and tiny buds hanging off it all the way around. Pointed finials sit directly above and below the body on the vertical axis. The amount of white space is the point here. Roughly half the circle is empty, and that emptiness is what makes the design feel light, so resist the urge to fill the background. A single green for every leaf on the vine, with the buds picked out in one contrasting color, is enough to finish the border. The butterfly can then take anything you like, and because its wing cells are so large it suits watercolor or a blended pencil gradient better than the busier sheets in this set. It also prints well at half size for a card.
