Layers of rounded petals surround the butterfly in this drawing. Its wings are broad and divided into a handful of long cells, which keeps the middle of the page much simpler than its border. Petals behind it come in two sizes. The inner set is narrow and upright, the outer set widens into full rounded shapes, and nearly every petal in both rings holds a small pointed leaf drawn with a central vein and a few ribs.
Shapes throughout are large and clearly separated, so this sheet reads as a mandala without asking for the patience most of them do.
Look for the repeat before you start. Those small leaves fall into a regular pattern around the ring, and coloring all of them the same way while varying the petals behind them produces a result that looks far more planned than the effort it takes. A pale wash on the petals with the leaves picked out in something saturated is the version of this page that prints best.
