At the heart of this design one butterfly holds its wings fully open, and every wing is cut into long narrow cells that taper toward the outer edge. The body is banded in even segments and the antennae curl outward past the forewings, so the insect reads clearly even though it sits inside a busy frame.
Working outward, a slim inner circle carries a repeating run of teardrop shapes and small tight spirals. Beyond that sits the feature the page is named for: a thick rope of interlaced strands that loops over and under itself the whole way around without a visible beginning or end. Tracing where one strand passes beneath another is half the pleasure of this sheet, and it rewards picking two or three shades and following each strand rather than filling the ring at random.
Eight pointed medallions are spaced evenly around the outside of the rope, each one shaped like a narrow leaf with a small knot tucked inside it. They break up the circle and give the eye somewhere to rest.
Everything is drawn in clean open outline on plain white paper, with no shaded areas and no filled black shapes anywhere, so fine tipped pens and pencils both behave predictably on the narrow knot strands.
