Fourteen keeps the pattern that thirteen introduced, a 1 followed by the digit you can hear in the word, and saying two of these in a row is usually what makes the rule stick. Read the number aloud, ask your child to find the four inside it, then look back at the thirteen sheet and do the same. Two examples beat any amount of explaining. The number takes up almost the whole page as two large bubble outlines with nothing else drawn around them, which gives a small hand a great deal of room and makes this a good sheet for a child who is still learning to keep a crayon inside a line. The 4 is worth pointing out while you are here, because it is the only digit in the whole set built entirely from straight lines and corners. Every other number curves somewhere.
