An open cardboard box sits square to you with its lid standing up behind it. Inside, around fifteen ring donuts are packed close together in overlapping rows, filling the box to its edges. They are not identical, which is the whole point. Some carry short strokes of icing radiating out from the hole, one near the back is covered in dense looping drizzle, another has a neat swirl, and several are plain rings with nothing on them at all. Every hole is drawn open and every glaze edge is its own wavy shape. The lid above is deliberately blank, a large clean panel that balances all the detail below it. There is a lot to do here. Fifteen donuts means fifteen decisions, and the sheet works best when someone commits to making each one different. Younger children usually pick four or five colors and repeat them around the box, which looks good too. If the blank lid feels empty, that space is there on purpose. Write a name on it, draw a shop logo, or fill it with a pattern. The box becomes a gift that way, which is more fun than coloring it brown.
