Letter A Is for Apple Coloring Page

This sheet puts the first letter of the alphabet on the page twice, once as a tall capital A and once as a round lowercase a, both drawn as hollow shapes with thick black edges and nothing but white paper inside. A smiling cartoon apple with a short stem and a single leaf waits underneath. Capital A gives children two slanted strokes that meet at a point plus one crossbar to bridge them, which makes it a friendly letter to trace because every stroke runs straight. The lowercase a asks for something different, a closed round bowl with a straight back, so the two forms sit side by side and show how much a letter changes between its cases. Most children colour the apple first because it is the most familiar shape on the page, then work back up to the letters. The wide interiors hold crayon, marker and coloured pencil equally well, and the outlines stay thick enough that a young hand can stay inside them. Print it at the start of an alphabet unit, or hand it out on its own when a child is learning the letter their own name begins with.
