Two birds share this sheet. The hen takes up the left two thirds, seen side on with her fan raised behind her, a heavy wattle at her throat and long legs planted on the ground. Her chick trots along at the lower right, small and round with a fluffy body, stubby legs and a beak already tipped upward. Wide white paper separates them, which keeps both outlines easy to work around.

A size difference this large invites a size appropriate split. Hand the chick to the youngest person at the table and let somebody older take the hen, since her fan and wing carry far more line work. If two people are coloring together, agreeing on one shared brown for both birds before you start is what makes them look like family rather than two unrelated animals.

A hen leads her brood for months. Young turkeys, called poults, follow their mother almost constantly through their first summer, roost on the ground with her until they can fly up to branches at around two weeks old, and stay with the group well into the fall.
