A tall buckled hat sits beside a small cornucopia in a still life arrangement, with corn, berries and leaves scattered around the base of both. Unlike the larger cornucopia page in this set, this one is a compact decorative motif rather than a full spilling harvest, and the intricate style adds a border of scrollwork around the whole group. Adult level detail.
Black is the expected color for the hat and it is worth resisting slightly. A very dark brown or charcoal, with the buckle left as bare paper and a pencil shadow drawn under it, gives a far better result than a solid black that swallows the hat's shape. Keep the scrollwork border in one light tone so it frames the still life without competing with it.
The buckled black hat is a nineteenth century invention. Actual Pilgrims wore a range of colors, reds and greens among them, and buckles were an expensive fashion item that arrived in England well after 1620. Victorian illustrators added them to make the figures look old fashioned.
