An old oil lantern hanging from a chain with a human skull sitting inside the glass. The metalwork gives you a domed cap, a vented collar, two side rails and a banded base, all drawn in fine even outlines.

The skull is drawn properly for coloring, which matters more than it sounds. Its eye sockets and nose opening are built from open outlines with interior lines rather than solid black holes, so you can shade them to whatever depth you want. Most printed skulls hand you filled sockets and take that choice away. The teeth are separate shapes too, and dropping them a half step off white is what makes the skull read as bone instead of paper.

The glass panels around the skull are wide and empty. Left white, the lantern looks clear and the skull sits in daylight. Taken to a deep tone they turn the case into something you are peering into, and the skull jumps forward.

There is no flame on this page on purpose. A lit candle forces a light direction and locks every other decision to it. Without one you are free to light the scene however you like.
