Haunted House on a Hill Coloring Page

This house is drawn in a loose, hand-inked style with lines thick enough for crayons. Two floors, a steep gable roof, a round attic window up in the peak and a pair of chimneys. Four tall windows run along the ground floor and three more sit upstairs, with a paneled front door and a short flight of steps at the middle.

Bare shrubs lean in from both sides. They are drawn as open scribbled branches rather than filled masses, so they take color quickly and never trap your child in a thicket of tiny shapes.

Every window on the page is left open and empty. That gives you eleven separate decisions to make and it is the fastest way to change the mood of the finished sheet. Black them all out and the place is abandoned. Light two or three and somebody is still living there. Younger children tend to color every window the same and that looks good too.

The roof is the largest single area on the page, so it is worth choosing first. A dark roof pushes the whole house toward night. Print a second copy and try the opposite. Comparing two finished versions teaches more about color than any amount of explaining does.
