A newborn sleeps in the lower right of this page with its cheek turned up and one tiny hand curled near its mouth. The top of its head has been drawn with dozens of fine hair strokes fanning out from the crown, the most delicate passage anywhere on the sheet and one worth leaving pale.
The woman holding the baby fills the left and the center. A shawl is draped over her head and falls across both shoulders and down past the lower edge, and its surface is worked with spirals, teardrops and paisley curls that give the fabric real weight. Her eyes are closed under heavily lashed lids and her head is bowed toward the child. Her hair escapes the shawl in long waving locks.
Behind the pair the paper is filled corner to corner. Large sunflower and daisy heads with ringed middles sit at intervals, joined by curling stems, small leaves, five petal blossoms and loose scroll shapes.
No empty ground is left anywhere, so decide early whether the background stays light and the figures go dark, or the reverse.
