An open book is held up at the center of this page and the two figures behind it are arranged around that single object. The reader is propped against a pillow with the book in both hands, turned slightly toward a small child who has burrowed in against their shoulder. Both faces are kept simple: a dot for each eye, a short curved mouth, a few strokes for the hair.
The room is furnished in flat outline. A wide window with a slatted blind sits behind the bed, a framed picture hangs on the wall to the left, and a nightstand below it holds a shaded lamp, a stack of books and a sprouting plant. On the right an angled clip lamp reaches in over the headboard and a round side table carries a small vase of flowers.
