Tulips are a gift to a colorist because the flower is essentially one clean cup, and this page hands you close to twenty of them. Each bloom is a rounded goblet of three or four overlapping petals, some shut tight and pointed, others spread far enough to show the shorter inner petals behind. They are packed shoulder to shoulder across the top two thirds of the sheet and angled in every direction.
Their leaves are long straps that arch down and out, much broader than a rose leaf and free of any fussy detail.
The stems converge into a vessel with a waisted neck, a wide swelling belly and a stepped circular foot. A band of small repeated motifs circles the neck, and a symmetrical scroll device is set into the front of the belly.
Two ruled lines box the composition in, and each corner holds a little sprig of leaves and berries with curled tendrils. The paper behind the tulips carries a pale damask of large leaf shapes and spirals. It is printed faintly enough to leave alone, though a light background wash across it will throw the flowers forward.
