Three jack-o'-lanterns sit on wooden porch steps with light coming out of their faces, drawn in the simple style with heavy outlines and almost nothing behind them. If you have seen the larger porch scene elsewhere in this collection, this is the pared back version of the same idea: three pumpkins instead of eight, no house, no trees, and shapes big enough for a four year old to fill.
Because there are only three, you can afford to treat each one differently rather than blending them into a group. One solid orange, one with its ribs picked out in a darker shade, one still slightly green at the stem end. Leave the cut faces bare. If a yellow highlighter is anywhere in the drawer, a light pass over the steps just below each pumpkin fakes the spill of light very convincingly.
Jack-o'-lanterns were carved from turnips long before pumpkins. Irish and Scottish families hollowed out turnips and beets for the same purpose, and only after emigration to North America, where pumpkins grew plentifully and cut far more easily, did the tradition change vegetables.
