Count the spokes before you start. Both wheels are drawn out in full, rim, tire, hub, and a complete fan of spokes on each side, and together they cover the bottom half of the sheet. Add the chainring with its teeth, the chain itself, and the pedal cranks, and there is more machinery in this drawing than in most of the collection. Above the frame, the boy has both hands on the grips and one sneaker planted on the pedal, leaning into it. His dad runs just behind with a hand out and one leg kicked back off the ground, keeping pace. Their faces are turned the same way, and both of them are grinning. A serious approach keeps the bike one metallic color and lets the two figures carry everything bright. A less serious one gives the frame, the rims, the tires, and the seat four separate colors so the whole machine looks assembled out of spare parts. Two short dashes under the wheels are the only ground. There is no road, no curb, and nothing behind them.
