Almost nothing happens in this picture, which is exactly right for the moment it draws. A man sits sideways in a deep armchair, barefoot, looking down at the newborn bundled across his forearm. The baby is wrapped so only its head and one small fist are showing, and its face is turned up toward his. The chair is the biggest shape on the page. It has a rolled back, a wide padded arm across the front, and four short tapered legs. All of that is smooth unbroken surface, so it takes a wash of color faster than anything else here and sets the temperature for the whole scene.
